South Carolina election official testifies on "dead voters" Feb 01, 2012

South Carolina

COLUMBIA, South Carolina: On Wednesday, January 25, State Election Commission Executive Director Marci Andino testified before the House Election Laws Subcommittee on votes cast under the name of deceased voters. Specifically, Andino addressed South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson's claim that 953 such votes had been erroneously or fraudulently cast. Critics questioned the assertion, saying such claims are over-hyped and often down to relatively innocent errors. In her testimony, Andino stated that she had not been provided Wilson's list, but offered several examples from a local county.

Besides one voter who had passed away after casting an absentee ballot, the errors were all clerical in nature. Andino emphasized that any vote wrongly cast undermines voter confidence, but also noted that it is equally inappropriate to deny legitimate voters access to the polls. She closed, stating, "It is very important for all of us to get this right."[1][2]
