Authority
The state Constitution addresses the office of the governor in Article IV, the Executive Department.

A candidate for the lieutenant governorship must be:
- a citizen of the United States
- at least 31 years old
- a resident of Oklahoma for at least 10 years

Oklahoma elects lieutenant governors in the midterm elections, that is, even years that are not Presidential election years. For Oklahoma, 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018 are all lieutenant lieutenant gubernatorial election years. Legally, the gubernatorial inauguration is always set for the second Monday in the January following an election. Thus, January 10, 2011 and January 12, 2015 are inaugural days.
Oklahoma voters cast a separate ballot for governor and lieutenant governor. Candidates for governor and lieutenant governor in Oklahoma must conduct separate campaigns.
Vacancies

At any time when the office of the Lieutenant Governor becomes vacant, the President Pro Tem of the Oklahoma State Senate succeeds.
Duties
The lieutenant governor is the first in line to become the new Governor of Oklahoma upon the death, resignation, or removal of the governor. The lieutenant governor also serves as the president of the Oklahoma State Senate, and may cast the tie breaking votes in that chamber.
She has such other responsibilities and duties as the Governor shall assign.
Compensation
The lieutenant governor's pay is set by law and may not be increased or diminished effective during the current term.
As of 2010, the lieutenant governor is paid $114,713 a year, the 13th highest lieutenant gubernatorial salary in America.
