The 38th and current lieutenant governor is Rick Sheehy, a Republican appointed in 2005 and elected in 2006 and 2010.
Authority
The state Constitution addresses the office of the lieutenant governor in Article IV, the Executive Department.

Candidates for lieutenant governor must be:
- at least 30 years old
- a resident of the state of Nebraska for at least 5 years
- a citizen of the United States
While serving, the Lieutenant Governor is ineligible for any other state office.

Nebraska elects lieutenant governors in the midterm elections, that is, even years that are not Presidential election years. For Nebraska, 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018 are all lieutenant gubernatorial election years. Legally, the lieutenant gubernatorial inauguration is always set for the first Thursday in the January following an election. Thus, January 6, 2011 and January 1, 2015 are inaugural days.
In the event of a tie, the legislature shall choose the winner from two highest vote getters.
Term limits
The lieutenant governor of Nebraska is limited to two consecutive terms in office. There is no limit on total number of terms.
Vacancies

After the Lieutenant Governor, the Speaker of the Legislature is the first to succeed, either temprarily or for the remainder of the term, to the governor's chair.
Duties
The Lieutenant Governor presides over the Senate and casts a tie breaksing vote. Constitutionally, she may sit on any board in lieu of the Governor.
She has such other responsibilities and duties as the Governor shall assign.
Compensation
The lieutenant governor's pay is set by law and may not be increased or diminished effective during the current term.
As of 2010, the lieutenant governor is paid $75,000 a year, the 31st highest lieutenant gubernatorial salary in America.
