Symposium on legalizing marijuana held today at Wayne State University's Law School Jan 27, 2012

Detroit, Michigan: Today, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the Wayne State University Law School will be hosting a forum featuring national and local experts as panelists discussing marijuana laws. Also, present will be former Attorney General Mike Cox as the keynote speaker, WSU law professor Robert Sedler, the former adviser to National Office of Drug Control, representatives from the Marijuana Policy Project and others who will social, economic, health and legal impacts of current reform efforts, as well as, the conflicts between federal and state laws, policy and enforcement.. The event is being put on by the Committee for Safer Michigan as part of an effort to put an amendment legalizing marijuana on the state ballot. Matthew Abel, campaign director for the committee, hopes the event, "will educate people how and why prohibition doesn't work, won't work and needs to be repealed."[1]

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette, however, believes the campaign is merely a way to legalize drugs and believes it will be fought by state leaders. On the petition drive he said, "We are trying to rebuild Michigan and rebuild the economy. This petition doesn't mean more jobs, and it doesn't keep our communities safe."[1]

For more information on the symposium, please see the Wayne State University's website here.
