Morales represents Stockton Unified's Area 3. He won his seat on the 7-person board by one vote in November 2008.
The group that sought to recall Morales submitted 2,411 signatures to San Joaquin County election officials on November 19. Election officials said that only 1,201 of the signatures were valid.[2]
Reasons mentioned by recall supporters as to why they support the recall are:
- They think he used fraud to win his 2008 campaign for his seat on the board.
- They think he interfered with Franklin High School's International Baccalaureate program.
- They think he was overly supportive of former Superintendent Tony Amato, who was eventually fired in September 2009.[2]
Recall supporters include Anthony Silva, who ran against Morales in 2008.[2]
Morales serves on the staff of Lois Wolk, a Democratic member of the California State Senate. He denies the charges against him.[2]
Morales is not the only member of the Stockton Unified board facing recall; signatures to force a recall election of Dan Castillo were filed on November 9.
