The Illinois lieutenant gubernatorial election of 2010 was held on November 2, 2010 following a primary election on February 2, 2010.[1]
The deadline for submission of nominating signatures to qualify for the primary ballot was November 2, 2009.
Democratic primary victor Scott Lee Cohen resigned his nomination less than a week after the primaries and the Illinois Democrats chose Sheila Simon to replace his name on the ballot. Simon faced Jason Plummer for the GOP in November. Along with her running mate, incumbent Pat Quinn, Simon prevailed. Now the Lieutenant Governor-elect, she takes office early in 2011.
Polls are open from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm, local time, on all election days. Registration deadlines are 28 days prior to election day for both primary and general elections.[2]
Illinois elects the lt. governor and governor on a single ticket in the general election, but runs separate primaries for the two offices, one of 6 states to do so.
On July 10, 2010, Illinois' Governor, Pat Quinn, signed legislation requiring candidates for governor and lt. governor to be jointly nominated at the primary election. The law takes effect January 1, 2011, making this year the last electoral cycle for Illinois' separate ticket balloting system for its highest offices.
