ATLANTA, Georgia, Counties in Georgia have already begun to place SPLOST (special purpose local option sales tax) measures on their March 6, presidential primary election ballots. In Dade County is looking to renew their $.01 tax which will expire in April if it is not renewed in March. The money generated from this tax goes towards county schools and would be in place for a further five years if approved. The Dade County Superintendent of Schools noted that with the continue loss of state funds, this tax is more important for local schools in order to ensure capital projects are funded to keep schools up to date. The Superintendent also noted that the tax is on purchases made in the county so others who visit and buy items also contribute to the funding.[1]
In Peach County, is seeking to renew their SPLOST this March even though the current one will not expire until 2015. County officials note that the tax is important for capital improvement projects in the county and asking for the renewal early ensures that there would not be an interruption of the tax. The current tax rate is set at 7 percent and would remain at that rate if renewed. Proposed projects in the county which would benefit from this money would be a sewer improvement project in the south of the county and a new facility for public workers.[2]
In Coweta County, their tax would expire in 2013 and the measure on the March ballot seeks to renew the SPLOST for a further seven years. Currently the money from the tax goes towards road and capital improvement projects throughout the county and if renewed would also go towards these and other future projects.[3]
