Demetrius Newton (b. March 15, 1928) is a Democratic member of the Alabama House of Representatives, representing the 53rd district, Jefferson County. First elected in 1986, he is the current Speaker Pro Tempore.

Newton is currently a privately practicing attorney as well as an attorney for the city of Birmingham. He has worked as a Judge of the city of Brownville from 1972-1978 and served in the United States Army from 1952-1954.

Newton is a member of a number of organizations, including 101 Black Men, Alabama Bar Association, American Bar Association, American Judicature Society, Mount Olive Baptist Church, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, National Bar Association, Vulcan Gold Club, 33rd Degree Masons, and the American Legion.[1]

Issues

Newton did not provide answers to the Alabama State Legislative Election 2006 National Political Awareness Test. The test provides voters with how a candidate would vote on the issues if elected.[2]

Newton won re-election to the 53rd District Seat in 2010. He defeated Anthony Johnson in the primary. He faced no opposition in the November 2 general election.[3][4]
