Nations earned his bachelor's in History from the University of Oklahoma in 1964.He graduated from the Baylor University College of Dentistry in 1968. He was a dentist from 1970 to 1998. He was also a lieutenant in the United States Navy from 1968 to 1970. He and his wife, Teena, have one child, Tara Jaramillo.
