Avery voted in favor of Nebraska Legislative Bill 39, to restrict initiative rights in Nebraska.[1]
Born February 7, 1942 in Harnett County, North Carolina, Avery is a professor emeritus at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He is a member of Common Cause Nebraska and the Democratic National Committee.
Avery earned his Bachelors degree and Masters degree from the University of Tennessee in 1968 and 1971 respectively and his PhD from Tulane University in 1975. All three degrees are in political science.
Avery has professional experience in the United States Air Force, as a political science instructor at Tulane University, and as circulation promotions manager for the Knoxville News Sentinel. He currently works as a professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and as an international trade consultant.
Avery began his political experience on the Democratic National Committee and later joined the Nebraska State Legislature as a senator in 2007.
Avery is currently involved in a number of organizations, including the American Academy of Political Science, Boy Scouts of America, Common Cause Nebraska, Common Cause National Governing Board, First Plymouth Congregational Church, Habitat for Humanity International Studies Association, International Political Economy Section, Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, and the Lincoln Independent Business Association.
Avery currently serves on three non-legislative committees; the Lincoln Public Schools Bond Committee, Lincoln Public Schools Needs Committee, and the Vote Nebraska Initiative Task Force.
